Christmas Fire Safety

Make sure your Christmas tree is not a fire hazard.  If you buy an artificial tree – check for a statement specifying fire-resistant treatment.

When choosing a fresh tree – make sure it is green, and the needles do not come out easily when you pull.  Bounce the trunk of the tree on the ground – if a shower of needles falls off, the tree is too dry – and poses a high fire risk.

Don’t use lighted candles on or near your Christmas tree.  Make sure candles have a secure base, and are out of reach of children – remember, hot wax burns!

Examine light strings every year and discard worn ones.  Never connect more than three strands together.

Use only outdoor lights outside your home and don’t rig them up using indoor extension cords.
